Permits and certificates

Obligation to hold a permit or a certificate of authorization
The following is a list of projects that require authorization. This is only a summary for residential projects.

A building permit is required for any of the following projects:

  • construction;
  • transformation;
  • major renovation;
  • changing the type of exterior siding;
  • modification of the structure or openings (door or window);
  • extension or addition to a building, including a solarium;
  • construction of a garden shed larger than 10 sq. metres;
  • installation of an in-ground or above-ground pool, or spa;
  • All plans and documents required in the by -law must accompany the application.

A certificate of authorization is required for any of the following projects:

  • installation of a sign;
  • installation of an antenna;
  • relocation or moving of a building;
  • digging or excavation work.

Even if your project does not require a permit or a certificate of authorization, you should call Urban Planning at 514-684-1033. The staff can inform you on rules and standards concerning your project.

NOTE: A permit, free of charge is mandatory to hold a garage sale.
** The permit is available at the Patrol office located at 10 Sunnydale, Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
