General principles

For safety and aesthetical reasons, the City of Dollard-des-Ormeaux has adopted a bylaw concerning hedges, whether in a residential, commercial or industrial zone.

Anyone contravening any provision of Bylaw 623 is guilty of an infraction and liable to a $50 to $2,000 fine when the offender is a natural person or to a $50 to $4,000 fine when the offender is a legal person.

No permit is required to plant a hedge. However, in commercial and industrial zones, prior approval by the building inspector is required.

Any installation of a hedge must be within the private property land limits (without encroaching over the line) and must be at a distance of 1 m (3.3 ft) or more from a fire hydrant.

General prohibitions and restrictions

Hedges are prohibited on corner lots (at a road intersection) when they are considered to be an obstacle to motorists' visibility and a traffic hazard.

Prohibitions and restrictions – residential zone

  • All hedges in front of the façade of a building shall be located on private property and shall not exceed 0.76 m (30 in) in height.
  • The maximum height of hedges located on the rear and lateral setbacks is 1.8 m (6 pi).

Prohibitions and restrictions –commercial or industrial zone

  • The maximum height of hedges not adjacent to a residential zone is 2.4 m (8 pi).
  • Please contact the Department for particular cases.

Restrictions concerning the maximum height of hedges do not apply to hedges surrounding buildings or installations owned by the municipality or by public utility companies, provided that the plans for hedges to be planted by such municipality or public utility company received the prior approval by the Planning Advisory Committee of Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
